Veni Vedi Vici

Enjoy rich moments in a Roman world and witness the awakening of Rome’s metropolis on the Danube.

When Tiberius, who later became emperor, erected a fortified winter camp in the Carnuntum area in the year 6 A.D., he founded one of the most important cities within the Roman empire. With buildings painstakingly recreated, entertaining anecdotes of inhabitants 2000 years ago, and highly enjoyable celebrations, you’ll suddenly feel whisked back to a time when world history was written in Carnuntum.

A highlight of your journey back to Roman times is a visit to the Museum Carnuntinum in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Opened by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1904, the “treasure house” of the Archaeological Park Carnuntum was built by architect Friedrich Ohmann in the style of a Roman country house. Here, you can marvel at unique finds from ancient Carnuntum: jewelry, tools, arms and cult objects have been restored with attention paid to the smallest minutiae and beg to be admired.
