Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary—inspired by the web-like construction of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and by the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas—is dedicated to commissioning and promoting site-specific installations in diverse locations. In opposition to the idea of a gallery as a string of enclosed rooms, Thyssen-Bornemisza places art works, or “pavillions,” in surprising, out of the way spots (a Croatian island, for example).
Behind the idea of a constellation of installations, is a desire to connect rural communities and regular citizens to art—to make art more accessible by removing the intimidating experience of entering into an ostentatious building full white walls and carefully curated exhibitions.
