Reichsbrücke
A 1976 trauma

The Reichsbrücke, or “Empire’s Bridge,” has the proud title of Vienna’s most famous and most utilized bridge. Sprawled across the Danube, the bridge traffics over 500,000 cars daily as well as walkers, cyclists and U-Bahn tracks.

It wouldn’t be a Viennese landmark without some history, which was made on the morning of August 1st, 1976, when the bridge collapsed, killing one person. Rebuilt after an international competition, the bridge is now fully restored and rebuilt with a layer of sound absorbing tarmac to boot!

Take a walk over the bridge at night for a view of Vienna alight—if you get tired half way across just hop on one of the three night bus stops along the span.
