This museum is housed at the Narrenturm (“madhouse tower”), Vienna’s first psychiatric hospital, built in 1784 at the request of Emperor Josef II. The city’s mentally ill were housed in the building until it eventually became a residence for doctors and nurses (lucky them!) with laboratories and workshops in 1866.

It has been the Federal Pathologic-Anatomical Museum since 1971 run by the University of Vienna.
