In this sad age of corporate mega-plex theaters, Gartenbau Kino is a precious gem. With its thick carpets, super-plush seats, copious wall-sconces and a signature maroon screen curtain, this theater exudes all of the classic elegance of the grand age of film.
With its huge, sweeping screen and an auditorium seating well over 700, Gartenbaukino is one of Vienna’s largest and grandest movie theaters. It is also one of its oldest. Originally established in 1919, the theater was completely refurnished in 1960 and has carefully maintained its original splendor to this day.
Gartenbaukino is a favorite venue for art-house movie premieres and a major site for the Viennale, Vienna’s annual international film festival that takes place in the fall. Before and after screenings, hang out with the movie buffs at Philiale, the small café in the theater foyer. Run by the guys from Phil, this is a great place for drinks or club night partying.
