Inconspicuously tucked away on a street off the south edge of Mariahilferstrasse, Donau has no signs or obvious entrance. Blink and you will miss it. The bar—a former synagogue—has been on the social radar since the ‘80s when it was at its height of popularity.
Having since been renovated and changed hands, these days Donau plays a mix-up of ‘90s techno (a non-resistant strain in Vienna, if ever there was), minimal techno, chill-out and drum ‘n’ bass at very low volumes.
Donau’s boasts a retro-futuristic ambiance: arched vaulted ceilings and neo-classic environment contrast highly with the modern music and visuals splashed across its walls, which swirl like artificial wall reliefs while you dance the night away.
A particular favorite among students, who flock to the reasonable prices and chill, cathedral-like environment.
