In what’s like an art-based suburb of Shanghai, a number of galleries and studios line the Suzhou Creek, encouraging the artistically-minded to voyage outside of downtown for a leisurely and aesthetically invigorating stroll. ShanghART Gallery, Art Scene Warehouse, Shine Art Space and m97 Gallery are among the more well-known of the larger galleries.

Don’t neglect the numerous studios hidden in the labyrinth of buildings which may offer more than a peek into the life and work of aspiring Chinese artists—who are often friendly and welcome discussion regarding their work. After hopping around, when it’s time to rest your feet and sip coffee (or cold beer), head for the few cafes near the entrance. There you’ll also come across Timezone 8 Editions—an art bookstore well-stocked with Chinese contemporary art publications. Most galleries close either on Sunday or Monday so it’s best to visit on other days of the week.
