With thin comforters and walls perhaps in need of a coat of fresh paint, boutique hotellier Joie de Vivre’s Kabuki never quite approaches posh—then again, with every room outfitted with a traditional Japanese Ofuro deep-soak tub, and many rooms equipped with full sauna-and-steam room amenities, perhaps posh isn’t the point.
With shojiesqe sliding screens for window dressings, free happy-hour sake and plum-wine and a dreamy and comfortable Japanese, Kabuki Hotel remains an authentic aspect of the still somewhat-rundown neighborhood and is, in fact the renovated offspring of a 1960’s-built original.
