The Luggage Store was founded in 1987 as an artist run, non profit, multidisciplinary arts organization. It began as an all volunteer collective with 17 members, most of whom were residents of the former Aarti Cooperative Hotel at Ellis and Leavenworth. Its programs are designed to broaden networks and to encourage the exchange of ideas between the diverse cultural communities that intersect the dynamic downtown neighborhood. The Luggage crew set up eclectic exhibitions, experimental performances, creative, improvisational live concerts, mobile screenings, and educational and public art programs.
