A staple when it comes to serving strapped but sassy Mission St. locals, Doc’s refuses to put on airs or present itself as anything but what it is: a great dive bar. A variety of cheap, trashy cocktails like the Trailer Park Punch ensure complete intoxication while leaving a few bucks left for Virginia, the tamale lady, if she happens to make her rounds.
Doc’s long, narrow anatomy is reminiscent of a subway platform. Regulars gather on stools at the bar holding conversations over the crackling juke box while larger groups huddle around shady tables in the back. Should you somehow find yourself not entertained by the sleazy neon décor, embroidered signs boasting offensive messages and cool mom-like bartenders, board games and a shuffleboard table in the back are easy to find partners for. (Once you have your shuffleboard style down, you might even consider signing up for their tournaments.)
Missionites swarm for thrifty happy hour specials from 6pm-9pm, and Fridays and Saturdays often see Doc’s loyal patrons jammed up through the door. Doc’s also hosts sporadic theme nights such as Barbie Mutilation Night as well as projecting the occasional indie or horror flick.
