Former Issey Miyake disciple Tsumori Chisato harbored childhood dreams of becoming a cartoonist. Big surprise: the designer’s signature style has the whimsy and intensity of a Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) anime film. Bold colors, bright patterns, illustrations, embroidery and appliqués on long silky dresses or chiffon tops are the graceful, quirky manifestation of that passion.
The boutique-gallery, designed by famed architect Christian Biecher, showcases the work of photographers, visual artists or set designers. In the end, it’s more of a contemporary art funhouse than a shop, with deadened passageways, abruptly slanted floor areas, a murky old workshop ceiling and a trick mirror welcoming accidental walk-ins—or double viewings of an irresistible new outfit.
