“Lèche-vitrines”, French for window-shopping, literally translates into “window licking.” It’s a challenge that Mercer by Edith faces when luring customers into its underground store, an unusual but prime retail spot. Le Bon Marché and the main entrance of the metro across the street mean lots of shopping traffic.
Owner Edith doesn’t waste an inch of its large space, packing in everything from shoes and jewelry to ready-to-wear and evening gowns. There are over 20 brands including many of the cheaper lines of major designers like M by Missoni, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, Moschino Cheap and Chic; main lines from Vera Wang to John Galliano; and lesser-known international brands such as Malene Bircer from Denmark and 6267 from Milan. While the mix of styles and brands may seem randomized, the owner has a good eye for choosing strong looks making it worth the descent.
