Le Centquatre is a unique contemporary platform for both emerging and established international artists in Paris. The massive 39,000m² space not only provides a home for the art works spread generously across multiple galleries and rehearsal spaces, but it also provides a living space for the resident artists at work.
One of the main objectives of its two directors, Robert Cantarella and Frédéric Fisbach, is to remove the boundaries between art and the public. By creating a live-in exhibition space where the artists are free to explore their creativity outside of the restrictive glare of the art scene, they aim to achieve new standards for creation, production and visibility as well as unrestricted access to contemporary art in its rawest and freshest form for the general public.
The regeneration of the 19th Century building has been the focus of a major project of cultural and urban renewal in the 19th arrondissement. The former municipal mortuary is now one of the most innovative galleries in the world, the fruits of which can be seen at four annual festivals of completed works.
