Le Café Rouge is a surprise package. From the outside it appears an average, charming little brasserie with chairs and tables outside under a cozy rain shelter. But once inside, during your hunt for the bar, you’ll discover two mezzanines, a lounge with a fireplace, huge Chesterfield sofas, a chandelier and a piano out back.
Located at the lively Carreau du Temple in the upper Marais, this spot is the right choice if you’re in the mood for an easy night out among a crowd of trendy kids from the block, the obligatory writer or two, and some loved-up couples.
The cuisine is predominantly modern twists on simple food ranging from cheeseburgers to cheese plates and linguine. The hushed light after eight is particularly favorable if you’re dining with romantic intentions, and on that topic: try a couple of pairs of the smooth cocktails to ensure you’re insides are buzzing, even if the conversation’s proving hard work.
On Tuesdays Le Café Rouge offers a free salsa course from 20:00-21:00 and drop in on a Sunday for one of the long, lingering brunch session.
