Doing things in pairs is always better than going at it alone, and surely Tandem Bar embodies this attitude. Combining the overlapping roles of bar and club as well as restaurant and lounge, Tandem is a hub for those who have set up shop in Bushwick close to the Jefferson L stop. Established by the sisters Jane and Cathy Virga, the bar reflects the changing nature of the neighborhood with its quirky, yet understated decor of discarded building materials, which includes scrap glass from Frank Gehry projects.
Though Tandem Bar does serve food, it’s perhaps more likely you’ll be headed here for some late night antics provided by any number of hip Bushwick protégés manning the turntables in their rough-and-ready backroom dancefloor. While there’s neither a guest list nor velvet ropes here, this may be one of the best places to get down to the beat—under its kitschy disco ball and laser lights—without the typical pretensions of Manhattan nightlife.
