Built in the Italian high-baroque style, and finished in 1690, the Theatine Church of St. Cajetan—known as the Theatinerkirche—is a Catholic church adorning Munich’s Odeonsplatz. Named after Kajetan von Thiene, the church was founded along with the order of the Theantines, who administered the church until 1801. Used for bureaucratic purposes by the Bavarian government throughout the 19th century, it was heavily damaged in World War II and was rebuilt faithful to its original condition. Today it offers a window into the opulent architecture of the late baroque period, and marks its importance as the the final resting place for many of Bavaria’s most important royalty.
