Opening Ceremony combines two otherwise contradictory concepts: exclusivity and availability. In the era when the internet renders rare and highly exclusive items more ubiquitous than ever before, why not create a store where you can find all these items in one complete package?
Forming more or less a department store of designer fashion labels, cultural publications, music and furniture, the layout of the LA branch of Opening Ceremony actually takes inspiration from the highways and urban sprawl that characterizes the city itself. Each of the store’s “shops”—individual spaces featuring a particular designer or brand—are separate from one another both in their merchandise and individualized décor.
Among its roster of cultural capital are labels including Alexander Wang, Nom de Guerre, Mayle, Topshop, DAP Art Books, Other Music, Band of Outsiders and the store’s own private collection. Everything definitely glitters here, but it also comes at a price, so head to the store’s second floor if your wallet needs to get some air.
