Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia Matty D’Arienzo decided to move to London in 2010 after falling in love with the city after a monthlong holiday. 25hrs with Matty D’Arienzo is a short peek into the daily life of one of London’s most esteemed tattoo artists who has a strong connection to traditional aesthetics in his work and of course…an eye for fashion.

Places in this guide

  • Self Sacrifice So cool it literally hurts

Self Sacrifice is a great tattooing and piercing shop. Iʼm doing a guest spot with them right now, the people working there are very good at what they do, itʼs got a really relaxing environment and itʼs in a great area.

  • Beatroot Hearty veggie eats

I have lunch at Beatroot all the time, they serve vegetarian and vegan food…itʼs really tasty. The people that work there are friendly, and being a vegan in London itʼs awesome that thereʼs a place I can pop into right around the corner from where I work.

  • John Snow Traditional pub with old school charm

John Snow is what Iʼd consider a typically English pub. The drinks are cheap – they serve a decent Jack Daniels, which is what I drink – and you can always expect to meet some interesting characters in there.

  • The Crobar Hard liquor and hard rock

The Crobarʼs got a real kind of rock and roll atmosphere. Itʼs a bit grimy and itʼs just a rad place to party. At night it gets packed with head banging heavy metal guys and gals, I love it. Everyone gets loose in there and has fun…it reminds me of a bar back home called Cherry Bar on AC/DC Lane…

  • Hasan Meze Mangal Charcoal grilled Turkish cuisine

Hasan is close to my house and they serve some amazing food. I always get the hummus, olives and red onion salad with an insanely tasty secret dressing. Itʼs a family run business, and Hasan himself mans the grill so you know itʼs going to be good. On the weekends it gets really busy so you definitely have to book a table but even when itʼs rammed the staff are always friendly.

  • Alibi Underground Dalston dive bar

I live in Dalston, in East London. Itʼs a rad area to live, thereʼs some really nice clubs and bars and one of my favourites is Alibi. Thereʼre live bands, DJs, movie nights…I donʼt even check what night it is I just go and have a ball. Itʼs a fun club, the bar staff are cool, all the people that go there are pretty cool and down to earth…itʼs a fun place to hang out. Plus, itʼs free entry every night – always a good thing.
