For a top-class meal, but without the stuffiness of a shirt-and-tie restaurant, Clerkenwell’s Moro will see you right. The hip Exmouth Market location ensures that the crowd is cool and you won’t be turned away from the door for wearing battered Converse. The food, however, is undeniably first class: for the past ten years Moro has ranked on the “best London restaurants” lists and spawned a series of best-selling cookery books.
The menu is Moorish, a combination of Spanish and Muslim Mediterranean cuisine, which the restaurant helpfully describes as a mix of “saffron and cinnamon.” A woodburning oven and charcoal grill ensure these are not just great recipes, but traditionally cooked, with the menu ranging from small tapas plates to full dishes. Fish features heavily—from scallops to grilled bream—while the puddings are sensational. Don’t leave without tasting the youghurt cake with pistachios and pomegranates. Oh, and if you love sherry you’ll be in seventh heaven, as so do the owners.
