Former Chef Partner at Soho and Borough Market’s Tapas Brindisa, José Pizarro’s first solo venture is this, José – his eponymous restaurant on Bermondsey Street. And if sherry or tapas are your thing and you fancy something a little different to the city’s usual ‘small plate’ fodder, then José is your baby.
Set on a sun-dipped corner just opposite local gastropub favourite The Garrison, this demure tapas bar (designed as a modern take on the traditional Barcelonan Boqueria-style restaurant with its enormous windows for people-watching, and blue-and-white tiled bar beneath whole hanging legs of Jamón Ibérico) is packed with a buzzing crowd. Pizarro delivers his regularly changing menu of tapas regulars alongside some more intriguing daily specials which change according to what’s available in the local markets each morning (Razor Clams a la Plancha, Crab and Basil Croquetas, Spring Lamb Chuletillas with Alioli), and needless to say the accompanying sherry selection rounds the whole small-but-perfectly-formed offering to a T.
