Enjoying sport in London is not the cheapest of exercises (forgive the pun) as you’re faced with either shelling out several tenners to visit a top-flight event or digging deep for access to a posh spa or gym. Yet Pitch & Putt offers a good loophole. It doesn’t qualify as an indulgence, and that’s exactly why it’s so satisfying. This nine-hole golf course is located at the slightly tatty extreme of the beautiful Royal Park of Richmond, a short walk from Mortlake station.
Within spitting distance of Roehampton Golf Course and the National Tennis Centre, Pitch & Putt is most definitely the embarrassing little sister of the family, but also the least stuffy and most fun. Sport shouldn’t just be for professionals. So step up empty handed, put a fiver on the counter (and get some change), then grab a club or two and stick around putting for as long as your patience holds out. Once you’re done with finessing your swing, hop on a bus to Richmond for some post-game beers.
