Originally set up in 1993 in a venue on Duke Street, White Cube was one of the smallest, but arguably one of the most influential commercial galleries at the time. Showing exhibitions of work by the likes of Chuck Close, Mona Hatoum, Ellsworth Kelly and Hiroshi Sugimoto, for many, White Cube offered the peak of international contemporary art as well as gaining a synonymous standing with the high profile YBA (Young British Artists) of the 1990s including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Gary Hume. The legacy of the YBA remains to this day, despite White Cube’s Duke Street gallery closing in 2002.
In April 2000, White Cube, Hoxton Square was set up as a second, larger gallery space. It boasts 2000 square feet of exhibition space and a view of Hoxton Square’s greenery. The gallery continues to champion popular UK artists as well as established and emerging talent from Britain and overseas. Keep your eyes peeled for White Cube exhibition previews which are open to the public and allow you to experience the trendy Hoxton art vibe first-hand.
