In the rambling, refurbished expanses of a three-storey Victorian coal gas factory, this South London art exhibition/studio space hosts an average of six main shows a year, along with a series of lectures, openings and other small-scale events.
The Gasworks dedicates three studios to its international residency programme and rents the rest to UK artists. It seeks to recruit young, lesser-known artists who will finish a major project in the course of their stay. The organisation takes its role as a promoter of new art very seriously: the residents’ work is often featured in Gasworks exhibitions and they also open their studios for regular public viewings.
