Finding this tucked away, barely-marked wine cave is only half the battle. Once you’ve located the subtle sign, you’ve still got to climb down the steep, rickety stairs to enter, and getting to the bar might mean ducking a low ceiling or squeezing through a huddle of people. But with its old world authenticity (established in 1890 and family-run since), award winning wine list, and inexpensive home-cooked nibbles (£6 salad, pate, quiche or pasties, for example) it’s no wonder this bar is coveted by Londoners.
Whilst this isn’t the spot for lagers or spirits, hearty wines—like Gordon’s Old Wood Tawny port, drawn directly from the wood cask—will still put some hair on your chest.
