We are related

Transforming the space of an old neglected second-hand dealer shop, We are related is a new art space opened on Skt. Hans Gade. Collectively run, the team aims to provide a platform to produce, show and sell work made by friends and upcoming creatives.

Many exciting activities are planned for 2010, check the website for updates.

Beaver Projects Art in the surburb

If you’re in up-and-coming Amager, look for an artistic flag—which changes frequently, based on a contribution-only process—flapping outside of a big white building the shape of a rectangle. It’s The Beaver Project, housed in the former headquarters of Scandinavia’s largest porn publisher and one of the more prominent international art galleries in the city.

There’s plenty of space for artistic freedom in the gallery’s huge rooms. Artists come from different backgrounds and choice of mediums, but all utilize strong, distinct signatures and an intelligent approach to the artistic process. Additionally, while promising Danish and more established artists typically exhibit at Beaver Projects, all artists are selected from the refreshing dictum that art should never be reduced to hype or fashion.

Warehouse 9 Revolution number 9

Hidden away and hard to find compared to most of the other establishments in the slaughter house district, this beaten up one-room party venue/exhibition space operates by its own twisted logic. Featuring portable toilets and a makeshift bar, Warehouse 9 has no intention of catering to the mainstream, occasionally dishing up extremely interesting parties and events. Set out to challenge boundaries in the music and art scenes, W9 extends its queer outlook to often focus on gender-contorting events with Ziggy Stardust-like artistically androgynous permutations.

Warehouse 9 is the site where infamous Danish performance art and cross-dressing ensemble Dunst (Danish for ‘reek’) usually host their parties; and it also serves as a breeding ground for the often overlooked currents of the Copenhagen underground art scene.

Posthus Teatret Where there is cinema, there is art, there is love

Selecting and importing a single film at a time to show in their ninety-seat screening room, Posthus Teatret has been a landmark cinema for over 32 years. With a legendary status in the local film community, it can be depended up on to source and screen only those films that adhere to high standards of artistic quality and push the medium forward.

The theater’s located partially underground and has a small café that, due to its low slung lights and old film posters on the walls, proffers a heartwarming nostalgic feel, almost as if you’re starring in one of the classic titles you might see on a vintage ad hanging behind you. It’s simple really: here you have a theater born and maintained out of a pure love of film. The people who operate and visit the theater are united in their passion for visual language, so expect good conversation surrounding any screening.

Fotografisk Center The forefront of photography

There are scant few galleries dedicated solely to photography in Copenhagen, making Fotografisk Center a vital outlet in the photographic art scene.

Fotografisk Center is an unimposing gallery complete with a select bookstore, showcasing both classic and contemporary photography. The high turnover rate of work ranges from the recurring Danish Press Photographers Awards and Young Danish Photography showcases to one-off exhibits by the likes of Nina Korhonen and Thierry Geoffroy.

Established by Lars Schwander in 1996, Fotografisk Center states that it is committed to presenting and encouraging photographers “whose willingness to experiment with the medium has helped broaden the definition of photography”. A must for photography and contemporary art enthusiasts.
