The original Space Theatre was founded in 1972 and quickly established itself as a defiantly non-racial venue, actively opposing the apartheid laws of the time. The first fringe theatre in the country it mounted close on 300 productions, pioneering the work of Athol Fugrad, John Kani, Winston Ntshona, Pieter Dirk Uys and Fatima Dike. The New Space Theatre aims to resurrect its long-standing legacy.
Situated in the restored three-storey building in Long Street, the venue boasts a 202 seat theatre and a smaller 100-seater performance area. The building itself houses two restaurants, a bar, art gallery and coffee shop, making it the perfect spot for a cultural evening in the city.
