Tucked away in trendy Kreuzkölln, Sing Blackbird is a charming vintage clothing shop and café. One half of the double-fronted store is taken up by a carefully edited, and reasonably priced, collection of garments from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. While the focus is on wearable chic, obvious standouts are the Japanese-influenced silk scarves and high heels in an array of neon brights. Shelves in the corner showcase books and zines from local independent publishers PogoBooks and naivsuper.
The café next door—lovingly restored and reinvented from its former incarnation as a phone-sex centre—is an exercise in restrained kitsch. Delicious homemade cakes are listed in menus assembled from old books and served on mismatched white china. Vegan brunch is served every weekend, and monthly flea markets and the occasional film screening take place. Visitors can sup a coffee made with beans from Berlin roastery Ridders and feel like they were back in grandma’s house—if the old dear had impeccable taste, free WiFi and a wardrobe to die for.
