Though you might scoff initially at the fact that it describes itself as ‘a hotel as unique as the city of Berlin’, given more time you’d be hard-pressed to prove the Arte Luise Kunsthotel wrong. Housed in a neo-classical 19th century palais—that underwent a little modern tweaking in 2003—Arte Luise opened in 1995 as an artist’s ‘project’ and has since developed into a hotel worthy of its boutique location. With over 50 artists (including Stefan Bree, Kehl and Nora Stalzer) contributing to the hotel’s conception—each going to funky town on a room of their own—it’s a deft and deliberate metaphorical middle finger to the one-size-fits all interior design job.
