European Cycle Messenger Championship
Free wheelin' through Berlin

A city as bike friendly and flat as Berlin is perfectly placed to play host to the 14th annual European Cycle Messenger Championships. This Tour de Berlin, messenger-style, recognizes the death-defying maneuvers that so many bike couriers surpass every day.

Starting on May 28th at 12noon at Tempelhof Airport, participants will need to complete goods “drop offs” and “pick ups” throughout the city, with the speediest cyclists going through to each next round until the finals on Monday 1 June.

Unlike is releasing its inner messenger and traipsing through the city on two wheels.

Your pick up: the Allianz Building on the Elsen Bridge. Take the lift to the 15th floor. Those lucky enough to work here enjoy one of the best panoramic views Berlin has to offer.
Now take that package to another of Berlin’s best observation platforms, to be found atop Potsdamer Platz 1, where visitors can enjoy the view from the 11th floor. Worth the trip.

  • Tiergarten Berlin's biggest park

The next trip is through the Tiergarten into the former West Berlin. The tiergarten, Berlin’s version of Central Park, is enormous and green in the warmer months. The many paths that lead vistors through its expanses allow time for slow pedaling and time for enjoying its cool, sweet air. In summer, the park is noteworthy as Germany’s largest barbecue area where thousands of families meet, especially newer immigrants (most notably Turkish) to enjoy their traditional passion for outdoor cooking, often until late in the evening.

  • Siegessäule Berlin's golden girl

After you’ve caught your breath, take a lap at high speed around the Großer Stern to marvel at the Victory Column and then on your way down Straße des 17. Juni to Ernst-Reuter Platz for one more lap just for fun and fitness on the job, after all people are people.
On through the bustling center of Kurfürstendamm to Fehrbelliner Platz for a delivery at the City Development offices, making sure to deliver to the correct room number. Take note of the antique glass elevator, certainly one-of-a-kind.

  • Kudamm Boulevard Knights

From the top to the bottom. The trip begins from the end of Kurfürstendamm. Heading east, the boulevard is at first unassuming, only hinting at the famous shopping district which begins in earnest around Leibniz strasse. Here, the many ageing residents go about their daily business, buying bread and other necessities just as in every other part of the city.
But soon you will find yourself surrounded by the shopping destinations of the city’s elite, jewelry by Cartier, scarves by Hermes, and every other thing imaginable to set the super-rich drooling and reaching for their Gucci wallets.

  • Viktoria Park History in the park

Over Schöneberg then to Kreuzsbergstrasse. The nicest route is over the Monumentenstrasse, where you can take in the classic architecture and panoramic views afforded by the streets‘ elevation. Now it‘s time for a break. Grab an ice cream cone at the ice cream store on Kreuzburgstr. Corner Großbeerenstr and head into Viktoria Park to enjoy a bit of sun.
