Berlin is a unique city and this small spot at Schlesisches Tor proves it. Salut Bäckerei is a Turkish bakery open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. It’s as cheap as all the other Turkish bakeries, but far surpasses them in quality and selection. It saves nights with a spinach-filled flaky pastry, brightens mornings with the light, fluffy Kastenweissbrot (white bread baked in a box-form) and sweetens afternoon tea with a fruit tartlet. Besides these viands, Salut offers a great choice of homemade cookies sold by the kilo.
Behind the sales counter, which is lined by fridges storing cakes, are the ovens, giving you full insight into the cookie manufacturing process. This spot is popular and you’ll rarely be alone in it—no matter what time of day. Unfortunately, this also means that some of their best products are frequently unavailable.
Tip: Avoid the darker breads. Salut is best when handling the white flour.
