Throwing a lifeline to the would-be chefs in town is the newly opened Kochhaus, situated on a busy street corner in Schöneberg. The concept behind Kochhaus is simple: Provide tasty and easy recipes along with everything required to create them, thereby inspiring those who might be intimidated by the idea of cooking at home.
Calling itself “the walkable cookbook,” the shop’s bright and welcoming interior consists of a series of tables and cooling chests overflowing with ingredients for perennial favorites such as Coq au Vin, Rinderfilet, or Risotto, along with some surprises like Thai soup Tom Kha Gai or Indian curry. Flyers offer step-by-step illustrated instructions on how to bring these ingredients into harmony together, along with a short history of each dish and a wine recommendation.
With the city’s cooking enthusiasts usually having to race around to ten different supermarkets and specialty shops to source their ingredients, Kochhaus’s five co-owners simply saw a need and filled it. Everything from the meat, fish, and veggies that serve as the centerpieces for the dishes to the equally important bits of butter, oil, and spices needed to enhance them is rationed and measured into small packages bearing the shop’s logo. Nothing need ever be thrown away. The prices too are a testament to the shop’s frugality, with packages ranging from two to ten Euros per person.
If you need another reason to drop by, Kochhaus offer cooking courses on Fridays that can be booked in advance. All recipe flyers are available for download on their website, where you can also place an order and take advantage of their delivery service (only in Schöneberg).
