Tucked into one of the hidden, ghost-town corners of heavily-frequented Mitte, Chipps is a restaurant on a mission. In an elegant but nearly empty street just North of Hausvogteiplatz, the same team that gave Berlin the long-running club Cookies and restaurant Cookies Cream has come out with a trendy yet casual counterpart. And in a city where Bratwurst and Döner reign supreme, nothing could be more welcome than a restaurant that serves up tasty and inventive vegetarian dishes with some of the freshest ingredients around.

In a bright, airy space with high-ceilings, wrap-around windows, and a summer patio, well-heeled diners munch on a variety of dishes based around the “chipp”—a variation on the potato pancake—or an Asian-inspired rice roll. In addition there is a daily special, again made with fresh vegetables (sourced from biological Brandenburg farms, of course), or a variety of greens and toppings that can be combined to construct the perfect fresh salad. And perhaps in a small stroke of genius, recognizing and appreciating the need for carnivores to have their meat and eat it too, Chipps has included a couple of meat and fish options as small “side dishes” on the menu—just in case your greens and grains call for a side of roast beef.

In keeping with the kind of community building that has made Cookies an institution, the team offers monthly, themed dinner and activity nights for kids under the apt moniker “Kidz Want Cookies.” For those who find themselves frequenting Chipps on a more than weekly basis, the restaurant sends around a daily newsletter tempting subscribers with the specials.
