This alternative art-house was established circa 1990 in the ruins of a former department store cum multipurpose warehouse used by the Nazis, DDR union organizers and cinema enthusiasts. Still noticeably a ruin, it is simultaneously a vibrant, living home for the arts.
Regularly changing exhibitions, installations, workshops, screenings at the cinema and events are the offerings that have tourists swarming. While perhaps not as grass-roots and challenging as it once was, Tacheles continues to represent the changes endured by the city after the fall of the Wall.
