Stolpersteine/Stumbling Blocks
Mini memorials

In commemoration of the Jews who were deported and killed during the reign of the Third Reich, artist Gunter Demnig created small brass plaques embedded in the ground, each engraved with the name of the former resident whose dwelling it sits before, their birth year, the year they were killed and the place of execution. As of September 2007 Demnig had installed more than 12,500 “stones” in over 300 cities and towns across Germany. The pieces quietly echo a history that can all but be forgotten.
