This old villa, now a historic monument, was built in 1889 for Richard Hildebrandt, a commander of German expeditions to the North Pole. Almost a century later, in 1986, it was founded as the Literaturhaus, a space for literary events and exhibitions, speakers and symposia related to all spheres of German and international literature.

Additionally, the institution hosts an elegant cafe-restaurant complete with a winter-garden where visitors can sip an afternoon tea protected from the cold but with a view of the house’s gardens.
