One of Berlin’s most classically beautiful squares, embraced by the Konzerthaus and the German and French Cathedrals, facing each other. Built in 1668 by Johann Arnold Nering, the nearby Linden trees lent themselves to the Lindenmarkt until the Gens d’Armes regiment was deployed at the square and gave it its current name. German poet Friedrich Schiller occupies the center of the square – in statue form, that is. The Berlin winter brings an extensive Weihnachtsmarkt, replete with vendors pawning everything from hand-knit gloves to steaming mugs of hot, spiked Glühwein.
