Throughout its 90 year history the Filmtheater am Friedrichshain has seen some serious ups and downs, from the city’s own trauma to the threat of privatization. But the cinema has stayed strong and remains the city’s largest art-house theater.

In 1995, after laborious economic struggles, the filmmaker Michael Verhoeven bought the building and with support of the Yorck Kino cinema chain restored the theater incorporating modern amenities like large double-seats with historic architectural details.
