This is the Berlin branch of the renowned Eigen+Art gallery in Leipzig. Founder and gallery owner Gerd Harry Lybke is an opportunist of sorts: once a nude model at Leipzig’s art academy in the 1980s, he mingled with painters like Neo Rauch and later exhibited their work in a humble backyard house apartment. When the GDR dissolved, interest in East-German art spiked and Lybke pushed his gallery and the artists he represented into the limelight.
Eigen+Art is also one of the main supporters of the “Leipziger Schule,” representing painters like Neo Rauch, Tim Eitel and Matthias Weischer.
