Das Direktorenhaus is a 1000m² art space conceived as an experimental laboratory for the synthesis of the arts.
Its name dates back to when the building was part of the State Mint in Mitte. Built in 1935, the wing’s well secured vault was used during World War II not just to store minted coins, but also to protect the art works of the State Museums of Berlin from the threat of bomb damage.
Nowadays, an altogether more abstract kind of preservation is taking place inside its walls: the preservation of the Gesamtkunstwerk itself. During its programs, traditional crafts will be combined with analogue techniques and digital media, and will not be limited to their own aesthetics but be played out as experimental formations with both social and asocial connotations.
The space promises to provide an atmospheric framework as a setting for the exploration and development of art, craft, design and performance.
