Berlin Medical Historical Museum
Not for the faint hearted

The Berlin Medical Historical Museum of the Charité (BMM) has been showing guts for over one hundred years. Literally.

From vitrines crowded with wet specimens of diseased fetuses in formaldehyde to antique respirators, the museum charts the history of medicine in general, with particular reference to Berlin’s role in the world of scientific research.

The museum is renowned for its pathological-anatomical collection, the brainchild (pun intended) of pathologist Rudolf Virchow. Around 750 specimens make up a collection intended both for medical students and the—perhaps slightly morbid—layman.

Within the museum, the lovely Virchow lecture hall ruin—which has been preserved in its current state—was “clothed” in 1993 by Christo and Jeanne Claude and now plays host to rotating art exhibitions, events and conferences.

This successor to Rudolf Virchow’s Pathological Museum is located in the former Museum Building of the Pathological Institute on the traditional grounds of the Charité.
