Within more or less the course of one year, Moritzplatz underwent a transformation from a black hole along the way to Alexanderplatz, to Kreuzberg’s new cultural epicenter. Much is owed to the opening of Planet Modulor in a former clothing factory, as well as the use of the nearby Aqua Butzke factory for artist ateliers and creative studios. Adding to the allure came the bar/club Prince Charles, located in the basement of the Aufbau Haus complex.
Walking along an inconspicuous downhill driveway off of Oranienstrasse will lead you to the doors of the underground club, where glass windows open up to the square-shaped club that once enclosed an indoor pool. Most nights are host to hip DJs doing their thing, but the club also features readings, bar nights and other more culturally-attuned affairs.
Oh, and the name: Prince Charles refers to both its location close to __Prinzen__strasse, as well as the former property owner, Carl Bechstein. Sorry, but aside from their “Prince Charles” and “Lady Di” cocktails, there’s no Mountbattens (or Battenbergs) to be found here.
