At the intersection of Glasgow, Scottish whisky, Mogwai and Neukölln lies Das Gift, German for “poison” and—should your language abilities be less than ausreichend —English for “present”. It’s within this vortex of influences and backgrounds that Rachel and Barry Burns of Mogwai set up their Neukölln pub, which thankfully goes beyond the bare-brick mold of so many other local bars.
Presenting a fusion of Berliner Eckkneipe charm in the context of a homely Glaswegian setting, Das Gift has become a centerpiece for the local arts and music scene, catering equally towards exhibitions in their adjacent “Giftraum” as well as after-show parties backed up by a strong DJ roster. Yet this being a pub, there’s more here than just for the eyes and ears, and a closer look at their drinks menu will prove rewarding. A wide selection of wines, Scottish ales, local German brews and, especially, whisky sets the tone for long conversations about art, music and whether or not Wedding will become the next “in” district.
Be on the lookout for their “Kosmische Bar!” nights, where DJs pair old VHS horror films with a soundtrack of Krautrock, psychedelic and Italo Disco. Yet should grainy video and revisionist soundtracks not be a part of the evening, then grab “The Runk”, a cocktail invented by Mogwai member John Cummings consisting of rum, maple syrup and lemon juice.
