Art & Culture with Eskenaziencur...
Photographers

Eskenaziencursiva is a photo studio based in Barcelona manned by Adriana Eskenazi and Laura Encursiva, two photographers who started working together in 2010 so they could mix their styles to create something bigger. Their work has enticed a wide variety of clients, from fashion designers, to model agencies, artists, bands, record labels, and magazines, whilst La Virreina, Miscelänea and Swallow Gallery have hosted their exhibitions. They have also directed and produced music videos for the Spanish group La Quiero Viva and designer Juan Vidal.

Art & Culture with Studio Eskenaziencursiva is a guide to all things arty in Barcelona. From graphic design institutions, to contemporary art book shops and neat part-cafe part-galleries—there’s something for everyone.

Places in this guide

  • Vallery New time for design

Vallery is a modern gallery shop. It’s at the front of the design studio Vasava, and they organise exhibitions of national and international graphic artists. They also sell clothes and design books. Every first Thursday of the month, they organize inaugurations of new exhibitions, and a lot of people involved in the world of art & design go there to drink a beer and see what’s up.

  • Kowasa International art book store

A pretty photo bookstore in Barcelona. They have a gallery with permanent exhibitions with Spanish artists. It’s an important place for art critics and collectors of photography.

  • Galería Artevistas Art for everyone

Artevistas is a contemporary art gallery, they have a relatively big space and it is located in a beautiful passageway in the centre of the old town of Barcelona. Curiously it’s in the building where Joan Miró was born. They promote new national talents and they work with approximately 50 emerging artists as well as more well known artists.

  • CD Drome Don't touch that groove

CD Drome is ideal for lovers of good music, you can find the latest electronic discs and also rare and unpublished indie music. They have a very extensive catalogue of vinyls and some turntables so you can listen to the music in the shop before buying the album.

  • La Central del Raval Bibliophilia at its best

La Central del Raval is located in an old chapel. It’s a humanities book store, were you can find a lot of different books on design, photography, art, poetry or narrative. They also have a part with lots of new comic books and child books. There is a downstairs part where you can find special offer books at very good prices.

  • Arkham Comics House of cartooning

Arkham Comics is a very small comic store, but very organized—you don’t expect to find so many things in such a small place. The owner is a real expert and he is always helping and advising about the latest arrivals and anything you ask him. They also have discontinued comics that you can’t find in other shops, fanzines, toys… we think it’s the best comic store in Barcelona.

  • Ras Books & beyond

Ras is a gallery and a book store which specializes in graphic design, architecture and photography books. They also do different events and talks with authors. They have a space for exhibitions; it isn’t very big but their shows are great.

  • Chandal Sweet little things

A music and photography store. You can find every kind of vintage object here but they specialize in toy cameras and polaroids. They were the first to sell the new polaroid reels, and they import cameras from all over the world. Expect to find limited edition t-shirts, rare vinyl, and objects for the home.

  • Cosmo Gallery Hungry aesthetes

Cosmo is an art gallery and a coffee shop. It’s a nice place to go and grab a beer or a coffee, while checking out the different art and design exhibitions. In the bar section you can also eat something, they do easy meals, like hummus or guacamole, and a lot of different juices. They also organize different events like workshops or small concerts. Every month they change the exhibitions, and on that day the space is usually full of people and there’s a good atmosphere.

  • La Virreina Centre de la Imatge Imagination & imaging

Photography-based La Virreina is located in the heart of Barcelona, at the top of Las Ramblas. It’s an old palace owned by the Barcelona city council. We especially like it because they use the space to host photo and video exhibitions. They have different rooms with smaller or bigger exhibitions, and you don’t have to pay to go to any of them. In 2011 they did a very good exhibition about Susan Meiselas. They also host conferences, projections and seminars, depending on the current exhibitions they have.

  • Miscelänea United we appreciate

Miscelänea is a “multidisciplinary arts space.” You can see between ten and fifteen exhibitions a year (they change them roughly every month). They have a lot of variety in the exhibitions—you can see photo, design, illustration, paintings, projections and art installations. They also have a shop where you can buy pieces by the artists that they show there, and if you become a partner (I think you have to pay 5 euros a month) you can also enjoy the upstairs bar.
