Barcelona’s beloved Parc de la Ciutadella was, until the late 19th century, home to a much maligned fortress that symbolized and protected imperial rule. Ah, how times have changed: A far more light-hearted affair these days, the park now bustles and thrives as Barcelona’s largest recreational space.
Aside from the neighboring zoo, there are countless of nature-friendly diversions to keep you entertained at Parc de la Ciutadella, including the Museu de Geologia, which is home to geological gems such as over 15,000 minerals, 14,000 rocks and 100,000 paleontological pieces. Other attractions include the lavish baroque fountain, designed by Josep Fontsère (and assisted by one Antoni Gaudí), a man-made boating lake, numerous sculptures and an intense range of tropical vegetation.
That said, most like to take advantage of the ample green space and tranquil vibes for the more simple pleasures in life—kicking back and reading, guitar-strumming, or just plain ol’ catching up with friends.
