This autumn, the first Spanish W hotel arrived triumphantly on Barceloneta beach; a striking, sail-shaped extravagance serving up generous doses of decadent design flourishes and the very first Bliss spa to hit Spanish shores. It’s the perfect pampering complement to the hotels fun and flirtatious crowd – a jet-set elite who bask, bathe and quaff beneath W’s glass fronted shadow.

As anyone who’s been ‘Blissed’ knows, Zen-style mantras and wheatgrass shots are not the done deal. Instead, it’s about indulgence from your head down to your toes, only pausing for a pit stop at the brownie buffet between treatments. It’s sheer rebellion, a break from the spa deprivation and essentially built around pleasure, with copious amounts of fun thrown in. This is reflected in the names of therapies on offer; a toning ‘Fat Girl Slim’, restorative ‘Hangover Herbie’ and relaxing ‘Blissage 105" massage all feature. Therapists don’t exist here either – they’re spa technicians, dressed in trendy jumpsuits and trainers to immediately make people feel both at home and strangely aspirational. It’s just all too cool – where else would you covet the style of a spa therapist?

Fortunately, the cool factor is met with treatments that do what they say on the tin. The Blissage massage is just that – a muscle melting marvel of a treatment combining Swedish, deep tissue and Thai stretching techniques, plus bags of hot cream wax tied around the feet to soothe and soften. Combining the best of beauty and downtime, Bliss (and its belt loosening brownies) creates a whole new benchmark for Spanish spa lovers this autumn.
