The famous Barca epithet that proclaims it “more than a club” sounds like marketing lip for “buy more replica shirts, please,” but it’s actually apt for a football team whose past is so enmeshed in the history of a nation. The Nou Camp was once a haven for dissenters to General Franco’s rule, and has so often since been a forum for Catalan grievances.
In terms of its values, the club has only recently reneged on its commendable and unique refusal to have a shirt sponsor, in order to accommodate the Unicef logo. It is also still run by a democracy of its fans.
So the Futbol Club de Barcelona museum, just like the epithet, is totally justified. Along with an impressive gallery of photographs of footballing greats, present and past (of which there have been so many), the club’s tumultuous history is also explored. The museum could perhaps have gone into greater detail in this aspect, but at least offers a great introduction to a fascinating tale of a fantastic football club.
