Manchester bar offers more than just homage to the rainiest city in England and its attendant pop mythology; it actually recreates the finest aspects of the many ramshackle, noisy nightspots still to be found there. The same ecstasy of cultural references is present in its many framed photographs and decorated tabletops, not to mention the music policy, an exuberant mix of contemporary alternative guitar music played at an appropriately loud volume.
The decor is understated yet imaginative, and, crucially, is dilapidated to just the point where it is roundly understood that the emphasis is on music and alcohol, rather than preening and posing. That is so often the beauty of the city of Manchester, and perhaps the reason why it has produced so much vital pop culture. To have this ethos transplanted to sunny Barcelona is a blessing, and is thankfully enjoyed by a raucous crowd of locals and tourists alike.
