This former lechería (milk shop) is somewhat renowned for being the birthplace of Terenci Moix. A Catalan writer, Moix obstinately embodied his region’s ideals of independence and fortitude, despite writing in Spanish (the dominant language reflecting the control his writings challenged). A vociferous opponent of Franco’s rule, and a declared homosexual, these aspects alone are enough to merit interest in the man and prompt a visit to this historic site.
The bar itself has preserved some of its original interior from the 1940s, when Moix was born. High ceilings and tiled floors and walls make for a homey feel. The clientele is chiefly local and the chatter loud and brash, just as one would wish for when drinking and channeling the spirit of dissent.
