Ton Matton is spearheading a private revolution. It began 10 years ago when Matton, a Dutch urban planner, discovered a deserted schoolhouse in Wendorf, Germany, and converted it into an isolated technical utopia. Matton sees his creation as a critical response to the idea of capitalism; by living off the land he is reclaiming responsibility, not in an effort to be self-sufficient, but instead to prove he can produce something of value that is not related to or controlled by money. In this way, Matton demonstrates the possibility of creating an alternative economy based on utility, creativity, and respect for people and the planet. Check out the full feature to see how his back-to-basics approach gently and effectively subverts the system.
