Surfing fosters a camaraderie between otherwise fierce rivals, a lifestyle which unites disparate individuals in the hunt for the perfect wave. He may now be a former surf pro, but Mikey DeTemple has never let the lifestyle fade. Nowadays, in place of the high-octane competition of the pro surf scene is the turning of the cine-reel, as DeTemple spends his time shooting surf-focused motion pictures for High-Sea Films.
For The Avant/Garde Diaries, he nostalgically returns to the site of many a childhood summer, the small fishing village of Montauk on Long Island. Aided by friend, and female no.2 longboarder in the world, Kassia Meador, DeTemple’s wistful ode to surf relives the dying days of summer.
